ALLEGED EXODUS OF NEW ZEALANDERS.

SETTLERS FOR NEW SOUTH WALES. The following paragraph from the "Sydney Morning Herald" of November 21 is interesting:—" New Zealand is rather touchy respecting the loss of population the Dominion has sustained to the gain of New South Wales. Recently the Intelligence Department published a statement 'showing that within a given period 85,667 people had co'me from New Zealand to New South Wales, while 78,710 had gone from New South Wales to New Zealand, the net result being, a gain for this State of 6957. Mr. Von. Dadelszen, Registrar-General of New Zealand, has responded with a set of figures covering the period from 1901 to September last. He shows that during that time New Zealand, received 111,684 persons from New South Wales, while only 90,513 New Zealanders came to New South Wales, so that the Dominion actually gained 21,171. The Intelligence Department declines to take part in any controversy over the matter, hut it has implicit confidence in its own figures. No agreement between the two places is possible until an absolutely common basis of calculation is adopted. It is quite possible that the New Zealand authorities reckon as arrivals from New South Wales persons who pass through Now Zealand on their journeyings to other parts of the world, and return to Australia probably by another route. Whatever the cause of the difference, wo have botm gaining population at the expense of Now Zealand, and the Intelligence Department deplores the fact. New Zealand landowners aro selling out in considerable numbers, and coming to New South Wales in search of farms and stations. Many of them seek the aid of the Intelligence Department, so there can be no mistake as to the accuracy of tho statement." v
