CONCERNING A CART.

A cross action, House and Hurrell Carriage Building Company v. Harry Buick, of Palmevston North, was hoard before Dr. M'Arthur, S.M. Tho original claim was for £53 os. 6d. Several itoms were admitted, and paid into court, and tho principal item in dispute was £26, the price of a butcher's cart. Albert ltobcrts appeared on rcmaud on Wednesday on a charge of having stolen jewollery valued at £36 13s. from tlio dwolliiig of Mr Frank Bedford, Bosworth Terrace. Annio Bedford stated that on Julv 81 slio left her' house at 11.30 in the morning, leaving a relative in charge. Sho returned home at 1.30, and at 3 o'clock jewellery valued at about £d 0 was missed from a dressing table in tko front bedroom. Mrs. Frascr, the relative in question, deposed that slio was in charge of tho nouso from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.. Sho was working iu a back room for somo time, the front door bcin>j left open. Detective Quirk, of Palnicrston North, stated that lie arrested accused on another charge on August 15. On searching his cffocts he found certain jewellery, produced, in a portmanteau. Detectivo Broberg stated that ho made enquiries into tho caso, and on September 27 charged accused with tho offence montioned. Accused told him that he went to Bedford's house, and finding tho front door open went in and stole the artielos. Ho subsequently sold them—with the exception of the articles found in tho port-' manteau by Detectivn Quirk—to a man named Charlio for £7. Accused pleaded guilty, and was oommitted to the Supreme Court for sentence. GUAIIDING THE PUBLIC). HEALTH. Tho Stock Dopnrtinont proscouted W;s. Itawlnll, of Joluisonvillo, on Wednesday, for a breach of tho Dairy Imluutry Act of 1898, in that ho hud used a conveyance for carrying mills from or about dairy _ premises for tho purpose of carrying brewers' grains. Mr. O'ltegan, who appeared for the Department, said that as accused had pleaded guilty tho Department did not wish to press for a heavy ponalt.v in this particular ease, but the Department had reason to believe that the offenco was vory provalent, and it was not an easy ono to detpct. All that was asked for was that it should be laid down that tho offence was regarded as a very serious breach, so that tho case would act as a warning to others. His Worship said tho offence was one against tho public health, and in this respect it was very important. Accused should have known it was an improper thing to uso a conveyance in which milk was carricd for carrying brewers' grains. Accused was convicted and fined £1 with £2 3s. Gd. costs.
