In reference to tho now tariff the annual report of tho Wellington .Vutomobilo, Club says:—" Tho new tariff caused some excitement in automobile circles, and the fact that motor tyres and cars wore place,d on tho free list came, as'a welcome surprise to motorists generally, although various clubs had, for somo timo past, agitated for tho remission of duty on tyros. Owing to strong opposition tho Government was unable to retain motor ears on tho freo list, but tho chassis and tyres aro now free, which will bring motoring within tho reach of persons with moderate incomes."
Apparently better tilings than a "Life on the Co.-an Wave,", arc ollering to young Americans. Tho following advertisement waa inserted by the Secretary of the Steamship Association of San Francisco in tho. "S.IV Examiner:" -"One hundred boys for -apprentices to Rcrve on American steamers. They will occupy tho position of petty officers on board. Must be American born and over 18 years of-ago; the term of engagement shall be three- years; wages 20dol. per month first year,'3odol. per month second year, /tOdol. per month third year, and a bonus at the end of third year of 250d01." J'his rate of pay, though more than received by many experienced and educated officers of Britishowned ships, elicited very few enquiries.
