The past week has witnessed a turn to mild conditions, fine spring" ' days, with sharp frosts at nighty, being- the order, and there is every , prospect for settled weather. » I As it is many years since the put>lic had an opportunity of viewing- an i Otago team in action on the locai ground the business places in tho town are closing at 2.30 p.m. to permit employees to see tho game. The following is the draw of the [.Cromwell Ladies Golf for tho first J round for Mrs Grant's trophy—Mrs llotop v Miss Gordon ; Mrs Jolly v Mrs Gordon; Mrs llosking- v M*f*~< Grant; Mrs Robertson v Mrs Holm; Miss Gait' v Mi's \V. An instance of the facilities offered by modern means of transport was provided at the beginning- of last week when Mrs T. M. Ellis, who received a sudden call to Nelson on account of the illness of her mother, left Cromwell just after midday on Monday • and arrived in Nelson an hour after midday on Tuesday. Of the twenty-five hours spent on tho journey only ten wore spent in actual travel.

Tin: mouth of July bus been one of tlio driest months experienced duringthe past year, barely half an inch of rain being recorded. Rain fell on tho following days—July ioth, n point*; iith, 20 points; 12th, 3 points; 20th, y points; 26th, 5 points; a total of 48 points. For tJie same month last year, 1.48 inches were recorded, exactly one inch more than this year.

An application by C. 0. Sanders (Mr jas. C. Parcel!) for a license for a water race and a certificate of abandonment of a right held by the Cromwell Development Company is unavoidably hold over owing- to tho voluminous naturo of tho evidence. After hearing the evidence of applicant and objectors, which took; some six hours, tho Warden reserved, his decision. Tho Vincent Sub-union will hold a dance in the Athenaeum Hall tomorrow evening l (Tuesday) on tho occasion of tho visit by tho Otago team. With music by a popular band and a buffet supper there is sure to be a big crowd present to entertain the visitors. The Lowburn Football (Jlub will hold an old-time dance on Saturday evening when patrons are assured of an enjoyable time.

Tho Nevis Diesel Gold Dredging Company had tho misfortune to have their fine dredge at Upper Nevis sink in tho dredge paddock about three weeks ago. it is reported that the water is up to the level of tho windows, the deck being about four feet under water. The mishap is particularly unfortunate as the dredge has done very little -work for the present company, the machine having been moored in the paddock for over 18 months past. Considerable difficulty will probably bo experienced in refloating the dredge as the paddock will have to be pumped out.

Rug-by enthusiasts in these parts will be well catered for this week, with the match between the Otago touring- team and Vincent, and the Vincent Sub-unions annual tournament. The former match will take place at Cromwell on Tuesday and as it is not often an Otago team visits these parts there is sure to be a guod attendance. The tournament, which will be held at Alexandra on Saturday, is always a most popular fixture which provides some fine, sparkling football. Given fine weather for this there is sure to bo a record attendance.

"We seem to be at a commencement, of a now era in the South Island in relation to the tourist question, and the prospects of the luture are of a favourable native,'» .said Mr G. J. Errington in his presidential address to the Otago Expansion League on the 'ioTh. ult. "Factors operating towards a greater •• of tourists are the more satisfactory means of access to the resorts. The roads leading to Otago's beauty spots were, in the past, much in the way of a nightmare to travel on. These have been improved, but much remains to be done. Further new loads have been formed, suclt as the Kingstoii-Queenistown connection, the Milford road is under way, and the beautiful Eglinton Valley is now open for all to see and admire. Then the liaast Pass road, which. I feel sure, will be found to be the mast important road connection of all, is under construction, and when this highway to the west is completed, the steady flow of travellers and business over the route will be of national importance as well as of particular benefit to Otajro. The league trusts thart no untoward event will delav the construction of this 1 vital link to the tourist resorts of the South Island."
