Senior matches for Saturday next are; —C lyde to Wanaka; Cromwell to Alexandra ; Matakanui a bye. B-grade: Wanaka to Lowburn; Alexandra to Moa Creek ; Bannockburn to Matakanui. The secretary, of the Vincent Subunion is in receipt of a letter from th# O. R. F. U. intimating that at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union it was resolved to play a match betwecn_a- team from the combined sub-unions of Otago and a Southland sub-union team at Invercargill on July 23rd. The O-R.F.U. suggested that the sub-unions should confer with one another so that arrangements can be made for selecting the combined county team. The following are the fixtures for the first round, the game in each case to bo played on the last-mentioned ground;— The flag matches opened in the county on Saturday. Clyde created a surprise by defeating Matakanui by seven points to three. This will give added interest to the season’s fixtures. Bannockburn B had a runaway victory over their lighter and more youthful opponents from Wanaka, winning < . 3b-o. ... I Lowburn B had difficulty in muster- j ! nig- a full side to go to Alexandra, and under the circumstances the result, 14-8 in Alexandra’s favour, was anything but disappointing. Lowburn B will have a much stronger B team from now on. The Cromwell-Wanaka senior fixture, at Cromwell, produced little to enthuse over. It opened with promise but with scrum after scrum, became ragged as the game wore on. Both teams played the 3-2-3 pack. Wanaka had a slight advantage in weight, but on both sides the ball hung badly in the back row. The Cromwell pack certainly put in some fine work in the loose. In any attempts at back play honors were with Cromwell. Purdue and McCulloch made some fine dashes, but handling along the line was faulty. Wanaka’s passing was “flat-footed’’ and seldom got' anywhere, but one noticeable cut in came from Hoe Halliday, who dashed past, the scrum m rare style. Line-kicking seemed a lost art. Peculiarly, with a heavy cross wind neither side adopted the high centring kick, which, with a floating ball, would have tested the most accurate fielder. In the game there was little to individualise. It ended in a draw, without a score, although Cromwell had perhaps a little the best of the territory, and any advantage in real chances. Each side had one reasonable chance from a penalty. Altogether it was the style of Rugby more than the personnel ol the teams which was at fault, and they should do better as the season advances. Mr R. D. Cox was referee. Before Saturday’s match, Mr Vorrath, an Otago rep forward of a couple of years ago, was elected captain of Cromwell. He ifll a stalwart, heady forward, and a good leader. Saturday’s matety was Mr R. D. Cox’s last game with the whistle in Vincent, as he leaves for a new' position at Invercargill early this week. Me has given splendid service to Vin- 1 cent Rugby especially as a referee, so j much so that the Vincent authorities , have recommended him to Southland, i Prior to Saturday’s game the two teams lined up on the field. Mr L. M. Jolly, president of Cromwell, thanked Mr Cox for his services, and wished him all success in his new sphere at Invercargill, the compliment' being supported by three hearty cheers from the players. Mr Cox returned thanks.
