Cromwell Argus AND NORTHERN GOLDFIELD GAZETTE. Cromwell, Monday, May. 11, 1931

We regret having to hold over detailed reports of several important meetings but these will appear in special form next issue. Elsewhere in this issue, Mr G. J. Rattray invites inquiries from anyone anticipating building-. Jolly and Sons have a 'special ad 'p. regarding- a big: Boot Sale tow in progress.

As a result of Cr Brown's personal effort, the sum of over ,£4O is now available for the children's playing area.

Mr R. Orr, .secretary of the hydroelectric committee, has collected from various reliable channels a budget of useful 'information on the Hawea scheme. This will no doubt be placed before members at an early date. A clever humourous skit on the recent elections came to hand too late for this issue. A full report of the Installation meeting of 1.0.0. F. lodge is also deferred until next issue.

Proceedings in connection with the Local Election on Wednesday evening were enlivened by a broadcast of music and progress Flection reports from the Centres, per medium of a Majestic Radio set installed in the window of Messrs _D. A. Jolly and Sons. The installation was a hurried one but the result was much appreciated by the waiting public. As the result of recent gaugings, the Otngo Central Electric Power Board is reported to be well on the way to adopting the Roaring Meg as a source of hydro-electric power, and 1000 k.vv. is said to be the amount aimed at. The board meets in Cromwell to-morrow, and all members, with the staff, will thereafter visit the stream. The Meg is said to bo capable of a good deal more than the I < \ver, aimed at.

A great indication of the district's possibilities was an exhibit in Messrs Bowies' window last week. It comprised six varieties of apples and several big bunches of unusually large grapes, and a fine exhibit of pears. These came from Mr 11. If. Growden's property at Ripponvale. The apples were perfect while the crapes equalled anything ever grown m or imported to the district, and in that W«t are quite mindful of overseas products.

"Thorougbbieds," a deft and skilful combination of romance, pathos, and action is the Oddfellows chief attraction for Saturday. It is the storv of a young jockey who is iiuluced to "throw" an important race he is expected to win, through the influence of a beautiful adventuress. He is found out and disgraced, but through the unfailing efforts of his former sweetheart whom he has deserted, he is given another chance. He makes good bv winning a big race and js restored 'to the favor of the racing public and his first sweetheart. Mary Nolan enacts the role of the flittering accomplice and Otis Harlan scores in a comedv role. Others in the company are Sam de Gra*se, Montagu Love, Claire McDowell-, David Torranee, Johnny F'ox Jr., and Haydon Stevenson..

"The Cuckoos." Mr Hull's talkie programme lor Friday carries a touching little romantic story; it is lavishly dressed and beautifully photgraphed, with a large part in gorgeous Technicolor. It boasts the greatest cast of able featured players which has reached the screen for some time; hundreds of dancers, singers, musicians, and extras make it a production of extravaganza proportions ; nine lilting song hits are introduced. But the comedy of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey, stars of the piece, runs riot throughout the whole show. Never before has the screen presented a team of comics like this one. They were featured in "Rio Rita," to be sure, but they were kept under restraint in that musical. Were they are allowed to give everything—and how they give it ! Being a costly special prices are as plus tax. Presbyterian Services for Sunday next: Cromwell 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Lowburu 3 p.m., Rev. A. R. ChisUolm.
