Cromwell Argus. AND NORTHERN GOLDFIELD GAZETTE. Cromwell, Monday, May 12, 1930

The Cromwell brass Band will play a programme ia tjie street next Saturday evening at 7 p.m.

v\ork at the Cromwell Development Company's weir has absorbed all available labor, and at the moment there ;»vf? no unemployed in the town.

The death is announced in Dunedia of Mrs j. Mayne, a lady well known throughout Central and the Lakes district. The deceased was a daughter of Mrs M. Johnston, formerly of Victoria Bridge hotel, and a sister of Mrs VV. Jelley, of Cromwell. The severity and continuance of frost is somewhat unususil lor this period of the year, but otherwise tie weather is perfect. Hard frosts were the order during the whole of the week, but the clays were bright and sunny. There is still no change ill these conditions. ■

Many of the older generation in iho town and district will regret to learn of the death in Dunedin of Mr C. '". llalliday. Away back in the eighties he occupied the position of postmaster at Cromwell, and following that was married to a Cromwell lady (Miss Jolly). On his retirement from the service, Mr and Mrs Hailiday took up their residence in Dunedin and have remained there ever since.

To enable the Cromwell Development Company to carry out repairs (o the weir, the gates at Lake Wakatiuu were closed last night. Provided weather is favorable the dam will remain closed for eight days, but unless a big change comes there is no reason why a longer closing should not be permitted. Prior to the closing the river was very low. This morning it is falling steadily at the town, but the lowest level is not likely to bo touched for a day or two, owing to the process of draining.

When the sump and drainage to 'he face was completed in Cornish Point mine early last week;, it was anticipated that the deepest ground had been touched. However, this was rpt the case, and the bottom again dipped away. To meet the position a now sump was put down at a. lower level, and one of the pumps installed there, with excellent results, the inflow of water being effectively handled. A heavj body of wash has made on trie bottom, fining encouraging prospects of heavy gold, the sample being what is known as the "rustv" or bla'-k gold, won in several rich parts of '"he district principally on the Ranfurlv claim at Kawarau Gorge. With Ihe Kawarau dam closed and the low state of the river good progress should he made.

At a meeting held in Cromwell on April 28th, at which delegates from Roxburgh, Alexandra, Clyde, Cromwell, Poolburn, and Becks were present, a Central Otago Amateur Golf Sub-association was formed. Dr Gilmour wa.s elected president, Mr j. Watson secretary, and Messrs Harlow, I. McLennan, and Dr Scrymgeour, a committee. Cromwell delegates refused to accept nomination, as the club had decided against affiliation with the New Zealand Golf Association, and this was one of 'the Condi-. tIQJIB ui the sub-ussoriatigii.
