THE LAND HUNGER.

To the liditor). v Sir.—Jt would seem by the keen competition for land in this district. that there is no other land for disposal except the I'isa Kbits. Should the public not turn their attention to other leases in this district that arc held on temporary titles, and are laMing due any time now. Our exports from this Dominion for the past year total one hundred and twenty million pounds worth and our imports ninety millions. leaving a working' balance of thirty million pounds; from this has to l>e deducted the nine millions of surplus capital accumulated by tho Banks throughout New Zealand at the end of the financial year on 31st March, K)2(). leaving- a working balance of twenty one million, to be divided amongst a population of one-and-a-half million people, or a workingprofit of fourteen pounds a year petcapita, per head. Is it any wonder the public are clamouring) for land and is it not possible to increase our exports so as to give us a _greater working profit. II is not till then that the people will be satisfied with their lot to the betterment and advancement of the whole country. There seems only one remedy for this unsatisfactory state of affairs and if is only by putting people on the land thereby giving them employment and an opportunity to make good for themselves and their families. There is at the same time plenty of Crown Land throughout the country held on temporary licenses which is capable of subdivision. thereby enabling flu's country to become more self-support-ing and save the necessity of importing wheat, coal, and potatoes from Australia.—l am etc.. LANDLESS.
