Messrs Harlaud and Wolff Lave posted notices in their yards specifically permitting smoking in all the iron-working department?, says a writer in the London " Daily Ex--press." Smoking at work is becoming the fashion, It is, indeed, the rule in most Government offices, which is, perhaps, why those offices are not exactly famous for work. Stockbrokers smoke in their offices all the time. Your solicitor will often offer you a cigarette when you call to see him on business, and I know more than one doctor who permits smoking in his consulting-room.

Particular care should be taken with young children as they are subject to disorders of the bowels. A. Press Association message from Cbristchurch states that an informa tion has been laid by the district Eepatriation Officer alleging fraud against a returned soldier, who obtained a grant of £l5O from the board. This, it is believed, will be the first case of this kind in the dominion. The circumstances alleged are that tho boldier incorrectly stated that he had had 11 years' experience as a tobacco nisfc, and obtained a grant to start him in this business. He actually had no experience in this particular line, and it was not long before the board had to take over the business. DON'T BE A BILIOUS NUISANCE.

It is quite evident tbat followei'3 of the turf in Now Zealand would bo lost if they were put down in Southern California for any length of time, that is, of course, if they were out to enjoy racing. According to tho Wellington owner and enthusiast, Mr Eric Riddiford, who returned to the Dominion by tho s.s. Makura last week, no racing goes on there. He anticipated there would ba a shortage of the sport, but not an entire absence, and consequently was very much surprised to find that this was so. Tea, the universal beverage, has advanced 7d a lb (landed price) since September, the latest quotes being 2s lOd (first grade) and 2* 7d (lowest grade). One reason given for this advance is a rise of 33 per cent, in value of the rupee. Still more sharp rises have taken place in the last 12 months in respect of other grocery lines. Cocoa beans, which were bought last year at £BO per ton, are quoted to-day (new season beans) at a ton ; Java coffee, quoted from Java to-day at £ll2 a ton, has been costing £45; and Mysore and Neilgheary coffees, costing £BO a ton at present, are now quoted for the new season at £l9O. STAY IN BED. The greatest danger from Influenza is its great tendency to result in pneumonia.
