COUPONS FOR DIAMONDS.
This is not a silly season topic. It is a question which is being discussed seriously among the diamonl merchants of the world, owing to the diamond shortage, the extraordinary demand, and the increased prices.
"We sha'n't be able to make a living soon,'.' plaintively remarks the dealer in thousand-pound diamonds. "The shortage is awful —something like £30,000,000 worth. And people are simply groaning for diamonds." That there is an extraordinary demand for diamonds, which cannot be met by the present supply, was borne out by further inquiries. When war broke out the South African mines were shut down for eighteen months; hence the shortage. On top of this comes the extra demand from thousands of people made rich by the war.
Diamonds which before the war cost £SO a carat are to-day fetching £BO and £9O a carat. , Generally speaking, diamonds are forty to, fifty per cent, up on pre-war prices, and the opinion is that prices will continue to rise.
