THE SUPER-MOVIE.
A quarter of a million sterling is the preliminary fee which is being paid to Edmund Lysle, a young American, for an option on his invention which promises to revolutionise the entire motion-picture industry. He has perfected a moving picture in which every optical characteristic —line, motion, and colour —is apparent. A complete record of everything photographed is now obtainable instead of a partial record —for Mr. Lyslc's invention has done away with "the shutter, and instead of a series of separate pictures his process reveals a continuous motioi? picture.
The motion picture of to-day only gives a partial record of whatever is photographed. For the presence of the shutter prevents a perfect record, in addition to causing. the flicker that is so trying. The new process is based on more than fifty separate inventions —optical, chemical, and mechanical. Not only is an entirely new kind of camera necessary to take pictures by this method, but a specially-prepar-ed film sensitized to differentiate between coulours must be employed, as well as a new type of projection machine.
The films in use to-day only distinguish between black and white or intermediate tones of grey. For instance, if a red rose is photographed in a blue vase the result will be black. The film used by Mr. Lysle is known as a' pan-chromatic film,, which means that it is sensitive to all colours. At first colour pictures will be introduced only in the more important theatres, as their cost will be far greater than those made at present. But their superiority is so great that they will, it is said gradually supplant the present-day pictures.
