Wanaka Notes.

(FhoaiOuk Own Coukkri'ONDKnt.)

Pembroke, Thursday 13th

A welcome home social, possibly the last of the series, was tendered to Corporal A. Milne, in the Pembroke hall on the 7th in.st. As usual there was a good attendance, and an enjoyable evening was spent. Corporal Milne had been some three months in charge of the Pembroke school prior to enlisting, and has been away some four \ ears, lie brought an English bride back with him. Mr F. D. Thomson presented Iho medal from the Wanaka Patriotic Association and on behalf of the gathering extended a hearty welcome home to Corporal and Mrs Milne, and wished them a happy and prosperous future. Corporal Milne replied in goon style. The usual dance followed. The music was supplied by Mrs Ironside and Mr Thwaites, and Mr G. Norman acted as M.C.

A mishap befell the launch •' Elswick "on Monday last. She was making her usual trip to , Makarora, and when crossing Pike's Bay, one mile south of Minaret, her engines stopped, and there being a strong wind blowing at the time she was soon on the beach, Luckily the beach is a sandy one, so it is expected that the boat will not be damaged. An attempt is to be made to-day to get her off. The passengers, including Mr J. Horn, who is on his election tour, secured hoises at Minaret and rode on to Makarora. Mr Horn returned to Pembroke by Mr Paterson's launch on Tuesday, and thus was able to have his meeting as arranged. An accident that might have had serious results occurred at Mt Iron, near Pembroke, on Tuesday last. A motor bicycle ridden by Mr F.

Ballantyne collided with a motor-car driven by Mr J. Haogh. The front wheel of"the motor bicycle was practically destroyed, while one of the front wheels of the car was damaged, Luckily none of the persons were hurt. The accident occurred where the road leaves the downs at Mt Iron and enters the flat near the racecourse. At that point there is rather an awkward bend, one cannot see anything coming the opposite way, and the road on the Pembroke side of the bend is very narrow. An expenditure of a very small sum of money would make this piece of road safe.
