HOAXED THE TURKS
BRITISH OFFICERS’ DEVICE. An amazing human document is being published in London. It is entitled ‘ The Hoad to Endor,’ and is written by Lieutenant Jones, son of Sir Henry Jones, of Glasgow - University, and Lieutenant B. W. Hill, an Australian airman, whom the Turks shot down in the Sinai desert. Lieutenant Hill put up so brave a light that the Turks sent a message to the British commander saying that lie had been taken prisoner, and should be decorated for gallantry. When taken prisoner Lieutenant Jones shammed incipient general paralysis, and Lieutenant Hill feigned melancholia. They read the Bible for seven months while scarcely moving, and they memorised long passages. The witch of Endor chapter gave them an idea of hoaxing the ’lurks into belief that they were spiritualists. So successful were they that the camp commandant appealed to Lieutenant Jones to assist to unearth buried treasure. Finally both were sent to Constantinople. The most critical scrutiny by the leading Turkish alienists failed to detect fraud. Ulimately they were released as incurable.
