SHOT THROUGH THE HEAD
RETURNED SOLDIER MURDERED. The following message was telegraphed from Toowoomba to the Sydney ‘Daily Telegraph 1 on October 1; -V murder of a brutal character is repented from Giligulgul .Station, near Miles. The details available here are meagre, but it appears that a returned soldier named Dai lev, who had for some time been tollowin'g the calling of a scalper or trapper of marsupials, was the victim of the tragedy. . , First knowledge was obtained by a settler named Willisley, who on Sunday last, in watering l his cattle in Sandy Greek, noticed that the sand had been recently disturbed, and was piled up in the shape of a mound. He scratched away some of the sand, and discovered the leg of a. man clothed in khaki. The police were immediately communicated with, and hastened to the scene, where the body ot a man was unearthed. It was then identiiierl as that of Hailey. He had been shot through the head, apparently when drinking water, and there were inductions that the shot was tired at close range. It is thought the man luul been dead about hours. His rille was some distance away. Bailey, it is understood, had arrived from ..1u aml ah recently with a (piaiitity of skins, and, receiving cash tor them, started on the return journey for Miles. lie, camped at 16-mile for lunch. It was here that the tragedy occurred. A man and a bov had previously cam peel with Bailey, 1 and thev left for Miles the same afternoon. ! When 'the two had reached the 10-mile ! the man left the hoy, stating that he was going wallaby shooting. That man has nob since been seen. Tho money received' by Bailey was missiu,r. The deceased held the rank oh ser-geant-major in the A.1.F., and is said to have Been thu owner of the iilm ‘Murphy of Anzac.’-
