Lowburn Notes.

(Fro-mOuii Own Correspondent.)

The departure of Mr M. L, Spratt and family fiom our midst is going to cause a big broach. In all matters oi public welfare Mr Spratt was ever to tbe fore. He came among us some twelve years ago and soon after had the misfortune to have his hotel destroyed by fire, With indomitable pluck he re-built, and in place of the old hotel put up a now building, which under a somewhat plain exterior held every comfort for the traveller an ! boarder. In this respect the building somewhat resembled its owner, lor the big kindly nature of Mr Spratt is ever bidden by a rough but homely bearing toward man. Behind the scenes Mrs Spratt has worked hard and faithfully, working endless hours so tint patrons should have the best of comforts. Many a stray dog and other dumb animals will miss these two big-hearted people, for the dumb animal has been treated with perhaps over-indulgence. The farewell social tendered to them was a big success, marred only by the fact that Mrs Spratt was not well enough to attend. Evidence of the popularity of the guests was shown in the manner in which the social was carried out, The committee worked hard and harmoniously, and were generously supported by the ladies. The sapper arrangements were splendid, reflecting the spirit in which they were made by the Lowburn ladies, and a band of willing workers filled every gap during the evening, so that every thing went with a swing, Mr and Mrs Spratt -and Mr Louis Spratt carry many good wishes with them, and we all trust that when they next settle down, prosperity wIU again wait upon them. Mr and Mrs Tisdall have taken over the business carried on by Mr Sprat t. Both being young and energetic they should become good citizens and an acquisition to the district. They have a big task ahead in replacing Mr and Mrs Spratt, but time and experience will prove good friends, and a hearty welcome is extended to them.
