Public Works Statement.
Sir William Fraser, Minister of Public Works, delivered tlie Statement, in the House on Thursday. Under the heading “Ways and Means,” the Statement contains the following :
On April Ist, 1919. the available ways and means for works purposes were £305,540. Additional sums received made a gross total of £1,31)3,(3-SI, The net expenditure on all works and services chargeable against tbe public works fund for the year 1918-19 amounted to £1,307,483. This left a credit balance in the ways and means account at March Mist, 1919, of £180,199. Authority exists for providing further funds, miking a total of £3,320,199. In addition it is proposed to ask for authority to provide a further £750,000, thus making available for expenditure during the current financial year ending March 31, 1930, a sum of £3,070,199.
The estimated expenditure cm public works for the current year (exclusive of accounts which have their own ways and means) is £3,98(3,357, leaving an estimated credit balance ot £89,913 to be carried forward to next year (1930-31). The Electric Power Works Loan Bill authorises the Minister of Finance to borrow £0,830,000 for electric power works. The amount provided is principally for the North Island, but the expenditure will not be undertaken right away. The sum of £30,000 is provided for surveys for an Otago scheme. There is a vote of £IO,OOO for the Otago Central Railway, and £5(50 for a postmaster's residence at Cromwell. Under the heading of Roads and Bridges the principal local votes appear. The following are included : —Black Bridge, Hindis River (alterations), £2OO ; Cl utli a River bridge (Quccnsberry), £100; Clyde bridge approach, £150; Clyde bridge repairs (on account of £IOOO, £1 for £1), £350; Clyde to Pembroke (£1 for £1), £l3O ; Cromwell sand encroachment prevention, £IOO ; Cromwell to Liudis River, lower crossing (£1 for £1), £150; Cromwell to Lowburn, £3OO ; Cromwell to Nevis, £l5O ; Cromwell to Wanaka, £300; i lliott’s road, £coo ; Hawea deer forests tracks, £SO; Hawea River bridge (Maungawera), on account of £3IOO. £1 10s for £1), £100; Lindis River bridge (Morvcn Hills), £ p J1); Lindis River to Tarras (£175, £1 for £1), £350 ; Luggale to Hawea (£7ot), £7 for £10), £9OO ; Luggatc to Mount Barker, £400; Manuberikia River bridge (Galloway crossing), £3,300; Mill Creek to head of Hawea Lake, £TOo ; Cardroua to Pembroke, £SOO ; Gentle Annie bridge (on account of £3000), £SOO, Glendhu to Mount Aspiring, £lj'o; Pembroke to Cardroua river, (Ballahtyne’s road), £100; Pembroke to Matiikitpki, £100; (“Lull's road (Crumwcli Borough) £3OO ; Bannockburn coal-pit road £100; Cardruua coal -pit road £3O.
