ENGINEER'S GENERAL REPORT. MaT.VK.VNL l RIIUN'G. Tenders will bo before you to-day for gravelling on the Malakauui-Disputed Spur Road. I have arranged to Iravc some pipe culverts put in and low places made up preparatory to the graved ling. As there is a probability of the land in the Matakanui Mining Reserve being subdivided I have done nothing to the road from the school towards the settlement, as this subdivision would cause alterations in the existing tracks. The roads within this riding are all in good order. The surfaceman lias been employed, doing general maintenance work during the last two mouths. JJanujiisui ks .v Riding. A large wooden culvert has been put in at Wilson's Lane and a good deal ol formation work has been done on this road, this latter work having been carried out by the roadman in charge of a small gang. I have forwarded the specifications For gravelling portion of this road for approval' and on their return I will call tenders for the work. 1 purchased a heavy swing plough for the use of the roadman in this riding so that now he has both a plough an I a scoop with which to do any small formation jobs. Some repairs will be necessary to the Omakau footbridge to secure the two spans nearest Omakau. One set of wooden piles was washed out by the Hoods last year but the railway rail piles are holding up the spans temporarily. EuiXscLKUGIi Jvl LUNG. The only work done within this riding during the last two months has been general maintenance work by the roadman. The new road to the power house has not yet been commenced but I will endeavor to have it done as soon aspossible.

The workers will not be a great political power in the Dominion while they are divided one against the other, but they probably will be able to control its administration as soon as (hey are agreed on a common policy, and we have no fear of what they will do when the day conies. It will be disappointing indeed if the next election finds Labor still divided into war ling fractions and unable to join effectively with the other progressive sections of the community in demanding a new era of social, industrial, and political advancement.—' Lyttleton Times,'
