According to current private gossip (writes a London correspondent), since Mr Churchill took charge of the Admiralty he has become as eager for increased naval construction as formerly he was eager to assist certain of his Cabinet colleagues in checking ;t. In view of the intensified feeling shown against us in Germany, he seems to have come to the conclusion that not only is some increase in the pace of construction necessary, but that it would not be unpopular in England. The editor of a London paper who has just had a conversation with him states that he made no effort to underrate the possibilities of war—a war which might be forced upon ns by Germany. “In the near future ?” queried the journalist. “ Who can tell ?” was the reply- “It might be attempted at any moment, even within the next three months, even within six weeks for all I know.” It is by no means certain, of course, that Mr Churchill will secure the sanction of the Cabinet for any acceleration of the normal rate of construction that he and Ins expert advisers may agree to be necessary. The present Chancellor of the Exchequer has always been reluctant to vote large suras of money for the navy, and there are others m the Cabinet habitually disposed to support Ins attitude.
