THE RETORT FEMININE
Amateur theatricals are more apt to be the occasion of tears than laughter. But this (says a gossip) is an instance of the opposite. It was at the dress rehearsal, and the (amateur' adventuress was embracing the (amateur) hero. The hero's (real) wife entered the drawing-room. The adventuress, who was no amateur at saying unpleasant things, remarked, "Oh, Mrs. , I hope you don't mind your husband kissing me.' The wife smiled. "Not in the least,", said she sweetly, "If he doesn't."
