Southland Crops Affected by Frost.
Growing crops susceptible to frost have suffered severoly during the li)ll!>12 season (says the ."Southland News.") Late in the spring one or two frosts were experienced, which did considerable damage to the potato crops in particular*. On the 7th of this month a stiff frost was experience ei, and on Saturday morning two degrees were registered on the ordinary thermometer, whilst the solar instrument registered 5 degrees. It appears to have been most severe on river Hits and low-lying lands, and potato crops on this class of country were completely destroyed. In the Winton district, where the frost appears to have been unusuiliy severe, ice of | : inch in thickness was to be seen on the water. It was not to be wondered at, therefore, that these late crops of potatoes did suffer severely. It is feared also, that the wheat crops have suffered considerable damage, as owing to the late season the bulk of the stuff has not yet outgrown the milky stage, and it is quite possible a large quintity of damaged grain suited for fowl feed only will find its way on to the market.
