Dredging and Mining.

Both nvers still continue nt a low level. Several showers during the week were accompanied by snow on the high country, and caused only a slight rise. The Cromwell Syndicates dredge was dropped down stream at the end of the week and will open out a cut in the Bannockburn Creek. Having completed the necessary repair*, the Punt commenced work again on Toesday in the paddock above the Lowburn punt. It is reported that the Lowburn dredge will be at work again in the course of a few weeks. The 90U dredge has been closed down and is at present in charge of a caretaker. Hartley was again on poor ground all the week and did not have a washup, the second successive week in which the dredge has failed to produce a return. Shine I had another poor return for the past week, and the recent indications of improved returns have proved disappointing. The dredgemaster of the Rising Sun reports for week ending 24th February, as follows: —Dredged 133 hours worked 15 feet ahead on a cut 100 yards wido No change to report in nature of ground or bottom. Machinery running well. The directors of the Rise and Shine Company have arranged to purchase the <Golden Gem drtdge at Miller's Flat, and the pontoons, winches, etc, of the Advance dredge at Alexandra. The two bulls will provide sufficient material for the construction of suitable pontoons for a second dredge, and a good deal of machinery from the two dredges will be made use of. The remarks of the " Otago Daily Times " contained in a recent issue jn reference to the destruction of firsts-class agricultural land by dredgaag, especially when returns are of a soor nature, are very much to the g)oint. and we are certainly in favor of something being done to prevent this. Locally we have a case in view, where the Shine I is now en gaged in destroying- land worth £lO per acre, and is obtaining returns which are not equal to working expenses. DREDGING RETURNS.
