A doctor was aroused by a loud rapping at his door. Leaning out of the window, he saw a person standing on the step banging away. “ What’s the matter down there?" he cried. ” Tis me ould mither that’s tuk bad, dochter,’ replied the man. “ Your mother is ill ?’’ " Faith, and she is tuk terrible, dochter." " How long have you been there?" " Faith, dochter, so long that I would be ashamed to mention it." " Then why didn’t you ring the night bell ?" “ I was; afraid of disturbing your honour,” was the Irishman's reply.”
