A KIPLING STORY.
Rudyard Kipling was once the guest at a literary dinner, and amongst those present was a man who tried to matoe up for what little he knew of literature by a good deal of pretence. Trjing to hold Kipling'a attention, he started a discussion concerning the spelling ,and pronunciation of the English language. "Have you ever noticed, Mr. Kipling," he said, " that in the entire English language there are only two words beginning with 'su ' that are pronounced as though beginning with ' sh ' ? These two are sumach- and sugar. Having made an exhaustive study of the subject, you may take it from me that this is so." Bored though he was, Kipling's politeness did not desert him. He quietly astod, " Are you sure ?"
