TO THE EDITOR.

SiK. — 1 read with interest, in your issue of the 22nd i list, your remarks on Mr Hay’s proposal re entertaining Mr vV. Fraser M.F., and 1 freely admit that Mr Hay richly deserved the rebuke you gave him. Hut knowing that gentleman as I do 1 cannot help feeling a bit sorry tor him. You know, (Sir, the man is in deadly earnest. He has stuck to Mr I* raser all these years, thTough thick ami thin. Moreover, he has no desire to hide Ids light under the proverbial bushel, and no doubt it will be gratifying to him too sre his name in print as foremost of the forty in trying to do honor to the man of their choice. And there may be another way of looking at it, although 1 am sure Mi Hay would be the last man in the world to ask lor any benefit or reward for bis past loyalty. You see, (Sir, It is j’i't possible that Mr Massey may, in the near future, be called upon to form a Ministry. It is also more than probable that Mr Fraser would have a seat in that Cabinet. And again, it is quite possible that Mr Fraser, at the head of any department, may find himself in need of one or two young men, of more than average ability, to assist him in running that department, and what more natural than that he should then think of his friends ; “One good turn deseives another.” Yon see, (Sir, many of us would like to lay aside the pick and shovel for an easy life, and although our own individual talent itnd energy has not, so far, enabled us to attain our end, I don’t think we should be blamed for taking advantage of any little outside influence that may come in our way. We are all striving to better our own conditions.” “ Heaven helps those who help themselves.” “ Then gently scan your hrither man, Still gentlier sister woman, Tho’ they should pang akenning wrung, To step aside is human. •Joci Causa. .Bannockburn, dan. 2oth, 1912.
