Dredging and Mining.

The rivers have fallen very slowl) during the past week, and are still at a fairly high level. Shine i is still on poor ground, bui a change is coming in and improved returns are anticipated in the coarse of a few vveekj. Hartley has been operating on payable wash but had the misfortune to break the tumbler shaft on Tuesday, and had a return of 15ozs lor 120 hours week. A new shaft has arrived and dredging will probably start again to day. The Cromwell Syndicate dredge was pulled up stream above the Bannockburn bridge, and resumed work again on Thursday. Electric li is likely to be subjected to an extensive overhaul prior to resuming dredging, and it is reported chat Mr Millar, at present on the Shine 11, has received a contract for the work. Electric lis at present repairing. The drelgemaster of the Basing Sun reports for the week ending 18to January as follows: Dredged 135 hours, worked ahead 15 feet on a cut- 90 yards wide. There is no change in the nature of the ground or bottom. The machinery is running well.
