The Russian Government intends to equip three expeditions for the purpose of completing the survey of the northeast passage between Europe and Asia and testing its suitability as an alternative route to the Far East. The expeditious are the outcome of a commission which three years ago inquired into this question and reported that navigation round the northern coasts of Siberia would be'easy, provided greater knowledge could be acquired of the ocean eastward of the Ycnesei River. Between Norway and the Taimyr Peninsula the waterway is already well-known. So also is the stretch from the Lena to the Bchring Strait, which is kept conparatively open by the warm waters of the Siberian rivers. What is now to be thoroughly examined is the part between the Taimyr peninsular and the Lena delta. It is unlikely that the surveys will establish the practicability of this route to the Far East. Many expeditions have already attempted the navigation of the Arctic shores of Siberia and not a few of them have come to grief or have been unable to penetrate beyond the Kara Sea. In any event, the route could he open only for a few months in summer, and is, therefore, never likely to be of much practical use to everyday commerce.
