4fr THIS DAY. Interprovincial football boomed on Saturday, and the results were : Otago 11, South Canterbury 8. Canterbury 32, Southland nil. Wellington 21, Wanganui 8. Hawkes Bay 12, Wairarapa 10. Auckland 21, Thames 8, Southland Boys High School 10, beat Otago Boys High School 8. Considerable hail and sleet fell here yesterday, with a gale from the southeast and southwest. Snow also fell up Christchurch way and reports from Methven state the fall is heavy there. Fears are expressed for the stock on the high country. Rua, the long-haired Maori prophet, has paid a visit to Wellington, to offer to sell land to the government.
Sir Joseph Ward has announced that the Government has approved of the establishment of a mail service between New Zealand and San Fran cisco. An arrangement has been made with the Union Steamship Co to extend their present service via Raratonga and Papeete, and to put on steamers with co.)l storage and re., frigerating machinery. The service will be commenced by a steamer leaving Auckland on October 22. F. H. Smyly was lined £l2, reduced to one fourth by the magistrate for not having declared wedding presents, namely gold bracelets and gold matchbox to the Customs Department. Smyly is the fourth officer on the Turakina.
At the sitting of the Divorce Court at Wellington, an adjournment had to be made owing to one of the jurors being intoxicated. Justice Chapman said he had never known of such an incident during forty years. As the man had been in the lockup all night he did not fiink it necessary to further punish him. A Melbourne cible states thit the New Zealand horse Broadsword, lately sold I y Sir George Clifford, won the Seaside Handicap of six furlongs at the Williamstown race 3 in record time for the course.
