The "'Beef Producing Qualities o< Aberdeen-Angus Cattle" are proclaimed by Mr. J. J. Cridlan, who asks : "Why do these cattle make a higher price per lb. in the market than any other breed, and even in the dull trade are the first sold ? Because the butcher, by practical experience, finds they contain the maximum of prime meat to the minimum o! coarse, and when roastihgs of the best quality are making 1/1 per lb. first-hand in the Smithfield Market, and clods and stickings and timber—viz., legs and shins —are making only 2d. to 3d. per lb., as they are now, it behoves the butcher to seek the animal which more nearly approaches the ideal than others. . . . Even its coarse parts are more valuable than those of other breeds ; the flanks and briskets have greater depth of flesh, and are interspersed with less wasteful fat and gristle."
Here is a goad puzzle :—A man went to a well with a five-quart can, and a three-quart can, he wants to bring back four quarts of water, how will he measure this ? Answer :—He fills the five-quart can. Out of the five-quart can he fills the three-quart can ; he throws the three quarts away, and pours the two quarts into the three-quart can. He fills the five-* quart can again, and fills up the three-quart can out of this, which takes one quart out of the five-quart can. Therefore he has four quarts left, accurately measured. Britain was known to the Phoenicians, and was named by them Barat Anak, "the land of tin." It is believed that the Phoenicians made trading expeditions to Britain as early as B.C. 1000.
