Coats off, shirt sleeves rolled up, sopping handkerchiefs hound tightly round their brows, Bloodthirsty Bill, Cut-throat Charlie, Daredevil Dick, the dealer, and Slasher Sam sat in solemn conclave round the table, playing a furious game of poker. Stakes and excitement ran high. Each man seemed to hold a tip-top hand, and none would relinguisb the betting. ■ Dloodthirsty Bill doubled Cut-throat Charlie, Dare-devil Dick, the dealer, doubled Bloodthirsty Bill, and Slasher Sam doubled Dare-devil Dick, the dealer. At last the time came for the hands to be exposed. "Pour twos !” shrieked Bloodthirs ty Bill. “Four threes !” shouted Cut-throai Charlie. “Straight flush!!!” roared Daredevil Dick, the dealer. . “Royal flush I! I!” screeched Slasher Sam. Dare-devil Dick, the dealer, looked over ruefully. “Take it, Sam, if you've got the nerve,” he muttered, “but, you know it's not the hand I dealt you I”
