PIGS MORE REMUNERATIVE THAN CATTLE.

Considering the short period of time they require to come to maturity, pigs are far more remunerative than cattle. Even compared at at their market value they sell as well as some classes of beef, and yet the farmers of the island where "the gintleman that pays the rint," is supposed to be so popular are unequal to the demand. The shrinkage in the total number of pigs in Ireland during the past year alone, has been something enormous ; and as a shortage is also recorded in other parts of the world prices have advanced by leaps and bounds. Why the farmers should have allowed their stock to sink so low is one of those puzzles that seem to defy solution. There are plenty of bacon curing factories to absorb a normal supply of the raw material, while the markets of Great Britain require a regular supply of bacon and eggs. Scotland is far behind other countries in the breeding and feeding of pigs. In the north of Scotland any number of farmers will admit that "they cannot be bothered with pigs."
