\V e are now experiencing true winter weather. The snow is lying fairly heavy from the Clyde Commonage on to St Bathans, though the Uunstan and Earnscleugh Flats are quite clear. On Monday last there __ was seven inches of snow on the Commonage, and it gotf deeper along tdie base of the range. Most of the rabbiting gangs have had to cease work. Another of the pioneers of Central Otago has joined the great majority, I refer to John Buckley, whose death occurred in the Dunstan Hospital, on Tuesday last, at the age of 84 years. lie came to the Dunstan in 18G4, where he followed mining in its various phases. For many years he was in partnership with Mr C. Holden of your town, and between them they sunk a lot of money in endeavoring to make Blackman’s Cully coal-pit a paying concern. His wife, who was a sister of the late James Holt, predeceased him twentythree years ago. During the last seven years he has enjoyed all the comforts of a good home with Mr and Mrs H. Partridge.
