A return match between Lowburn and Bannockburn will be played at Lowburn on Saturday. Clyde defeated Alexandra, afc Clyde, on Saturday, by about 10 runs.

The match between Cromwell and Lowburn, set down for last Saturday, had to be postponed on account of tho former beiug unable to get a team for that day.

The quidnuncs of Australian cricket pavilions are just now amusing themselves with a problem arising out of an incident in the match between Victoria and Mr A. U. Jones' team. It occurred when Hardstaff and Barnes, with over 100 wanted and witii only two wickets in hand, were holding tho fort for the visitors. Hardstaff was running or walking—all the time to get the bowling, and presently he cut the last ball of an over square with tho wicket. Jt was a stroke for which two might easily have been run, but Hardstaff, anxious to get to the other end against Saunders, cooly strolled down the pitch. Rush was the fieldsman, and, as he ran, ho observed some signalling from Saunders, lie grasped the situation, and picking up the ball, threw it to the boundary. It was claimed that tho hit should count -1, but Crockett, the umpire, allowed 1. Many urge that Crockett was wrong, and, in the absence of any definite guidance on the point in the laws of tho game, three different contentions are put forward. These are: 1. One run should have been scored as Rule d 3 states that the umpires shall be tho solo judges of fair and unfair play. It is argued that Rush's action was liable to review by the umpire. 2. Live should have been scored—one for the original stroke and four for the overthrow. 3. Four should have been scored, as the ball went to the boundary, and, in order to make it an overthrow, a ball must pass the wicket to tha opposite boundary The episode is likely to be discussed long after the rest of Hardstaff's magnificieut innings is forgotten.
