INCOMES OF GRAND DUKES.
ESTATES ASSIGNED THEM YIELD £2,000,000 A YEAR. * The Russian Imperial family numbers at the present time something like 60 grand dukes and grand duchesses. It is a fact that, they would one and all be wholly dependent upon the reigning emperor whose wealth is practically boundless, were it not that a former Czar. Paul I-, set aside a certain number of estates to which he gave the curious name of •'the Imperial appanages." | The income of these vast stretches jof fertile land is devoted to the ' maintenance of all those members of I the Imperial family who arc not in I the direct line of succession. At the present lime this source of income produces £2,000,000 a year, ! and the Imperial appanages stand in the proud position of being the : largest landowner, the most importj ant and prosperous farmer, and the | wealthiest wine producer in the Rusi sian Empire. This is the reason why I Russian grand dukes are so amazingi ly wealthy.
