Caledonian Sports.

The 27th Annual Gathering of the above sports was, without doubt, the best in every way yet held by the society since its inception. The weather was perfect, and the proceedings during the day passed off without a hitch. Last year, it will be remembered, the committee spent a largesum of money in improving the present grounds, consequently 'hey did not have a large cash surplus; but the wisdom of so-doing has been 1 apparent this year, for the attendance was a record one, and the entries likewise. Whilst congratulating the committee on their able management, we must impress on them the necessity for utilising the large surplus this year (fully £SO) in building a ladies room and a tea room, as it will still further improve the attendance and the comfort of the public. We are aware the committee had the idea in view this year, and probably were wise not to take the risk of running into debt in building these rooms, but that they will give it favorable consideration for next year is almost certain. The amount taken at the gate was over £2O, as against £l4 last year, and when it is remembered the membership this year was 100 against 70 last year it will give some idea of the very large attendance that was present, which is estimated* at 800. The foot races were well contested, and a feature of the day's sport was the pipers in costume and the Highland dancing, which was very much appreciated by the public, and as Miss Fanny Perriam, the Messrs McKechnie Bros., and Kilgour were included in the dancers, better dancing and playing could not be seen in any part of the colony. The Fire Brigade competitions were very interesting and exciting, and eagerly watched during the afternoon by a large number. A special word of praise is due to the way the judges (Mr Dale, of Alexandra and Mr Jack, of Cromwell) carried out their onerous duties in these competitions. # . We can only say m conclusion the management deserve the very best thanks of the society for the- large amount of energy they put into the work, and it is only on the day of the sports that this is noticeable. The Secretary (Mr G. Stumbles) deserves great praise for the way he has worked the society up in the last few years, and the popular President (Mr Ernest Jolly) has worked hard for months for the sucoess of the meeting, and it must be very gratifying to all concerned that it has turned out such a huge success. The starting of Mr F. Donnelly was exceptionally good. The judges and office-bearers, one and all, gave every satisfaction, and were very attentive to their duties. Appended are the results: — 1.
