SQUELCHED.

During its journey to the City the other morning the conductor of the train car applied for the fares. A lady tendered him one penny and four farthings for the twopenny ride. Seeing the man look at the coins rather doubtfully, she said : "Won't they do ?" "They won't accept them at the office," he replied ; "but I'll take them home and give them to the kiddies." An old gent in the corner, happening to hear what had passed, chimed in with : "You dare not refuse them ; they are coins of the realm." "You'll pardon me," the conductor replied, "1 did not refuse them. I said they would not take them at the office." Passing along, he came to the old gent, who tendered sixpence for his twopenny ride. The man gave him three pennies and the four farthings in change. The old gent looked surprised, and said : "I don't want them" (referring to the farthings), "they are no good to me," The reply came quicker than was expected : " "You can't refuse them, sir : they are coins of the realm."
