Goldfields' Challenge Shield

Tho competition for the abcve tit Alexandra on Friday, and alum a eery exciting finish, Cromwell came out ahead by 5 points, with Queenstown 5 points behind Arrow, the second team, and Alexandra only 20 points behind the winners. Captain Laidlaw acted as range officer. The arrangements were excellently carried out, and host Bellamy provided an excellent lunch. The match was commenced about 10 a.m., and was finished shortly after 3 p.m. Tho following are the scores :

178 199 174 551 Range Prizes. 300 yds, Pte Aspinall, W.M.R., 3? ; counted out, Lieut Mcßride and Corp Stephenson, W.M.R. 500 yds, Lieut Jolly, C.R., 33 ; counted out, Lieut Tidey, C.R. 600yds,Lieut Mcßride, 32, W.M.R. Aggregate, Lieut Mcßride, 95, W.M.R. In the evening the Alexandra Rifles, in their full dress uniform, in which they made their first appearance, headed by the Alexandra Brass Band, and accompanied by the various teams, assembled at the Orderly Room and marched round the town to the Public Hall, where a social was held in aid of the funds of the local corps. The hall was crowded and dancing was entered into with spirit, excellent music being provided by Mr Briasco's orchestra, During the evening Captain Laidlaw made a short speech, and handed over the trophy to the winners. Captain McKenzie responded suitably, and was heartily applauded as he bore away the much-coveted trophy. A number of prizes won by members of the local corps were also presented. The competing teams carry away with them bright recollections of a very enjoyable time spent at Alexandra, owing to the hospitality of the Alexandra Rifles and general public. At a business meeting held the evening before the match, it was resolved to continue the contests in the same order as before, so that next year's match will be fired at Cromwell; after that Queenstown, Arrow and Alexandra. It was also resolved to admit rifle club's on payment of the entry money originally paid by the volunteer companies. We would suggest that a field firing team match should bo held on the same day, after the Shield Match is fired. It would not take long and would prove very interesting and exciting.
