The programme for the Cromwell Tradesmen’s Racing Club (subject to approval of the Dunedin Jockey Club) will be found in our advertising columns. One remarkable feature in it is that the races are all short, the Tradesmen’s Handicap, of one mile, being the longest of the flat races. This will, no doubt, meet with all trainers’ approbation, as the time at their disposal will not admit of a preparation for longer events. Mr G. Romans, the popular Lake County sport, is laying a straight-out book on the* Derby. These are his prices offered sto 1 Sorceress ; 5 to 1 The Orphan ; 6 to 1 Young Fox ; 6to I Hinda filly; 6 to 1 Silver Coin ; 6to 1 Wild West; 6to T Trump; Bto 1 Phryne ; Bto 1 Miss Lucy ; Bto 1 Capi Tenac; 10 to 1 Young Lady Constance ; and 10 to 1 Lady Elizabeth. Catalpa, the newly imported racing mare into this district, met with a slight accident the other day. While running in the yard, she took fright, and tried to negotiate a 6ft picket gate. She got .balanced on the top, however, and then turned a “seven” on to her back on the other side. He owner thinks that she will not be fit to race until Christmas. When referring to this mare in a previous issue, we had not ascertained her breeding, but. have since heard that she is by Kingfisher. The Alexandra Jockey Club submitted their annual programme to the public last week. The various events are District Maiden Trot, of 15 guineas; Maiden Plate, of 20 aovs; Alexandra Handicap, of 27 aovs; Handicap Hack Race, of £l2 10s ; Handicap Time Trot, of £25 15s; Handicap Selling Race, of 15 sovs ; Handicap Time Trot of 27 aovs ; ( and Welter Hack Handicap, of 15 sovs. The total amount given away in stakes is £ls8 —a handsome sum for a one day’s country meeting. Mr Jas. Young, well known in these parts as a trainer and jockey, arrived here recently with a big raking chestnut gelding, by Johnny Faa. He is a maiden plater.
