SYDNEY; August 9, A sensational conspiracy case has been occupying the court lately. Last year Judge Windeyer granted Thomas Richard Butler a decree nisi for divorce from his wife on the ground of adultery with George Williams, whose real name has since been ascertained to be Charles Davis. Subsequent revelations led the Crown to prefer against Butler, Davis, and a woman named Peake a charge of conspiracy to falsely accuse Mrs Butler. Evidence was submitted to prove that Davis and Peake had been paid by Butler to lead his wife astray in order that the latter might .obtain a divorce. All three accused were found guilty; thejutfy adding a rider that Mrs Butler

had not committed the offence for which the divorce was granted. Butler and Davis were sentenced to seven, and Peake to four years’ imprisonment. Rofe, who acted as solicitor for Butler in the divorce proceedings, has also been arrested on a charge of conspiracy.
