CHILDREN’S TREAT.
The idea that suggested itself to the Cromwell School Committee to give the children of the town an outdoor treat on or about Easter, took practical form on Friday last, when nearly if not quite 150 of the rising generation congregated on the Cricket Ground to indulge in a pic-nic and to conest in a long programme of sports for which liberal money-prizes were allotted. The necessary funds for the event were collected in the town without any diificulty. Miss Scott, teacher, and Mr J. Marshall being the canvassers To Miss Scott is due considerable praise, not only for the collecting but also for valuable aid throughout the festive day, when she was ably assisted by a number of other young ladies. Mr Jas. Scott prepared the eatables, which it is needless to say were of excellent quality, and highly relished by the little ones, and also, indeed, by the older section of the crowd that mustered during the afternoon. The weather was in every way favorable, and the affair proved highly successful, fully realising the happy anticipations which for more than a week previous had filled the breasts of those most interested. The large gathering of nicely-dressed, healthful children, gratified parents, hilarious youth and maiden, all made gay with the inspiriting strains of the Band, who generously gave their services for the occasion, went to make up a scene very pleasing, and one which we hope to see recur annually. The programme of sports was under the direction of Messrs Davidson, Marshall. Jolly and Brown (S.N.), and was carried through with entire satisfaction. The prizes were in money, and except for vaulting, wrestling, and the 200 yds race, the uniform amount for each event was 3s, 2s, and Is, The following gives the list of prize-winners in the respective items: — Flat Race, boys over 13— F.
