Mr Ballance has returned to Wellington without coming further South than Timaru. The accumulation of work in the Defence Department is said to he the reason. A creditor’s petition to adjudicate David Proudfoot (contractor) a bankrupt came before the Supreme Court to-day. The Walton Park Brick and Tile Company’s liquidator was the petitioner. The Registrar decided than an act of bankruptcy had been committed, and granted adjudication. It was stated that Proudfoot was ou his way returning to this country, and appeal was granted. A laborer named Jas. Russell was found dead in a stable loft on Sunday morning. At the inquest to-day it was stated there were no signs of foul play, and a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. A child five years of age was found on board the Northern Express on Saturday. As uo one appeared to claim him he was taken charge of by the police, and returned to Oamaru to-day. A destructive fire occurred on Saturday at Wellington destroying Te Aro House, one of the largest drapexy houses there. The Insurances amount to £14,500, distributed among nineteen offices.
