HAWEA RACES.

{ I! /' fl li, j\ {\ y\ i 'JL *' !• A moat successful meeting came off at the Hawea Flat on Tuesday last—a sunshiny day and well-contested fields helping to'make an enjoyable afternoon’s sport- Vjsitqra .were present from all parts of the surrounding districts Wanaka, , ’Albert Town, Long Valley and Bendigo being well represented. About 100 people were altogether present. The only drawback to tjlie proceedings was the late hour at which the races commenced, it being almost dark before the last race was over. The arrangements were carried out by the stewards in; an efficient .mapper, Mr Harvey gave general satisfaction in the catering line. „,! , . Mr Harvey’s Winnie 1 ■ ,‘ Mr Kane’s Ayr 2 Mr Muir’s Bella ... ... ... : 3 Mr Beaufort’s Investment 0 Ayr and Investment were fancied for this race, but the winner turned up in Winnie, who came in with a couple of lengths to spare, and Bella a bad third. Investment, shortly after starting, bolted off the course, and so was out of it. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 8 sova. One and a half mile, over six flights of hurdles. Mr D. M‘Lean’s Cockabulla, 10st 41b ... 1 Mr Hardy’s Artful Joe, 9st 121b ... .. 2 Mr Muir’s Bella, 10st ... 3 Mr Urquhart’g Lottie, 9st 0 Mr Brown’s Schomberg, list 0 Schomberg bolted at the post, and a start had to be made without him. Cockabulla and Artful Joe kept company all the way round, but finally Cockabulla drew away, and won by two lengths. Bella and Lottie, who did not so readily take the sticks, came in considerably in the rear. Hawea Handicap, of 10 sova. One and a half - mile. Mr Hardie.’s Dandy, 10st 1 Mr L. M l ’Lean’s Wildboy, 9st .., ... 2 Mr J. Kane’s Maori Chief, 9st 71b 3 Mr Brown’s Schomberg, 9st 71b 0 Mr Beaufort’s Investment, 7st 7lb ... ... 0 This was the event of the meeting. Maori Chief was the favorite, though Dandy, in spite of his heavy impost, was fancied and backed by some ; Wildboy too had supporters. A good start having been effected, Investment went at once to the front with a strong lead, but after going quarter of a mile bolted as usual. Maori Chief then took up the running, and for a mile looked like the winner, but Wildboy and Dandy drawing up, he had to retire, Wildboy led into the straight, when he was passed by Dandy, who won a good race by a length and a half. Hack Race, of 5 sovs. District race. Halfmile heats. No weight under 11 stone. For all horses that have never started for public money. Mr L. M‘Lean’s Tommy ... 1 1 P, Urqnbart’s Rory, H. M'Kinlay’a Biddy, and T. Muir’s Katie also ran. This was a gift to Tommy, who won both heats easily. For the Consolation stakes, of 5 sovs, only Wildboy and Schomberg entered, so the race fell through for want of a third entry.
