ier> r en fc The following letter by Mr Walters is made e . l, k üblic for the first time in the columns of by shj lie Australasian :— tj l6 Christchurch, May 20, 1873. To the Canterbury Jockey Club. Gentlemen, —I write to ask you to extend leniency to me by relieving my mare, Peeress, rom the disqualification under which she is abouring. In order to induce you to treat 5 ne with leniency, I can show you that if I 3 icted in a wrong manner, others were more 0 ;uilty than myself, whereas I am the only mo who has been punished. A bookmaker 8 pame to me a few days before the races, and 3. Lsked whether I would join with himself and 9 [itilers in the purchase of Peeress from Mr 4 Jledwood. I consented, and after an inter--9 iview on Monday, November 4, by appoint--9 Lent, between myself, three bookmakers, 9 and Mr Redwood, the following arrangement q jwas come to and carried out on Tuesday Q morning, November 5. The bookmakers 0 paid Mr Redwood £SOO in cash. I made up 4 Ihe difference of the price of £BOO by an ac--0 ccptance at fourteen days of £3OO. This ac--6 beptance was endorsed by the bookmakers 0 knd handed to Mr Redwood. The bonk--6 makers received an acknowledgment of the 9 ipayment of £SOO, which was held by them. 9 [ The mare was officially scratched the same 9 ; night, and became my property by subse--4 i qnent arrangement, on my retiring the acceptance for £3OO. 1 now see the wrong j j position in which I unthinkingly placed j : myself, and regret having put myself in a ) j position which enabled certain parties to ) : defraud the public. I now ask your conside--5 | ration of my case, saying at the same time . that lam not induced by any promise from 1. yourselves to make this statement.—l am, . &c., 1 Wm. Walters. The Australasian says that it is impossible e y 3 transaction as honest. 31 ~
