o —- FRIDAY, MAY 6. The whole of this day’s sitting was taken up on the Otago Representation Bill, a measure which proposes to reduce the number of seats in the Provincial Council from tlrirty-eight to twenty-four. The debate was resumed on Monday, when an amendment, “That the bill be read that day six months,” was moved by Mr McDermid, but lost on a division. Tiro bill was then read a second time. On the motion of Mr Mosley, a select Committee was appointed by ballot to revise the Bill. 11 MONDAY, MAY 9. The House met at two o’clock. manhood suffrage. Mr Haughton moved, “That this Council is of opinion that in consideration of the approach, iug general elections, it is desirable that the franchise should bo placed upon a basis more consistent than the present, with the due representation of the people, and recommends the adoption of Registered Manhood Suffrage.” The hon. gentleman delivered a long mid able speech in support of the motion which was se conded by Mr Millar. In the course of the debate that ensued, Mr Ashcroft m ove d as an amendment that all the words after “ people” in the original motion be struck out. This was agreed to.

TUESDAY, MAY 10. MrShophurd moved, “ That it i* dorirafclo that the weight carried by drays, waggons, ftnd other weight-carrying vehicles on tho roads of the province, also, tho width of tires of wheels of same, should be regulated by Ordinance, and that tho Government take steps to oatrjr the above resolution into effect.” An amusing debate followed, and the was carried on a division, by 15 to 11. The debate on Mr M'Dermid’s amendment on Mr llaughton’s motion was resumed, and was afterwards adjourned until the Treasurer htufc made the Financial Statement. Mr Brown moved/“ That this Council is of opinion that voting by ballot should be adopted at all elections for this Provincial Council and the Superintendciicj.” The motion was seconded by Mr Shepherd and was agreed to.
