OWAXA. The Owaka Caledonian Society held their Annual Sports at Owaka on the Domain on Monday. Favoured 'by fine -weather, which improved as the day progressed, large numbers assembled and the meeting was a record one from every point of view. The gate money exceeded last year's total Iby £l'7, and the entry money by about £9 10s. The prizemoney paid out was about £4 in excess of last year. Unfortunately the requests for special trains to suit the Baklntha and Tahakopn to Owaka residents were turned down by the 'Railway Department, otherwise the attendance would have Ibeen very much greater. The various events were well contested, providing a real good day's sport for competitors and spectators alike. The entries for the piping, dancing, chopping and sawing events were particularly good. The flat races also gave some good races and close finishes. There was a good attendance of outside competitors in all events, .many of whom are waiting for the Port iNfolyneux meeting. The Balclutha 'Pipe Band provided bright and stirring music during, the day, and enlivened the proceedings with their marches. The costumes of the dam-ers and pipe competitors added the finishing toucli to a picturesque gathering. Mr !P. Reid catered for the luncheon and afternoon tea on the ground. The whole arrangements reflect much credit on the executive, and particularly on the President '("Mr T. Maginness) and the Secretary (Mr "W, Richardson). The latter naturally saddled the biggest 'burden, and at all times proved courteous and obliging. The membership now totals about 150. In 'be evening a. dance was held by

the society in the 'Memorial Hall, over 130 couples crowding the Satgft hall. An enjoyable evening tu spent, however, Mr Trevor Gibson providing the dance music and IMr F, Reid the catering.
