PERSONAL.
An early settler in the. person of llr Moses Me' Lay, of Gore, passed away 011 Christmas eve, at the ripe age of nearly 84 years. The late Mr tifcLay was a native of Sterlingshire and arrived in the Dominion 68 years ago. He first settled in the southern end of the Clutha district. When Logan's Merino Downs Estate was subdivided the late Mr MeLay took up a sectionand farmed it with conspicuous success until about nine years ago, when lie retired and lived privately at Gore. During the deceased's residence at Clutha he was elected one. of the first -members of the Licensing. Committee, which assisted in reducing the number of hotels •in the district. He also discharged the duties of County Council valuator, and was for several years valuer for the Government under the Advances to Settlers Department. The deceased was a fine type of sturdy settler, very kind and sympathetic, and ever ready to assist a neighbour He was predeceased 'by his wife neary two years ago. 'A family of five sons: and seven daughters survive to mourn their loss.
