INTERESTING MACHINERY.

The factory of Messrs Thomson and Co., 'Crawford Street, Duuedin, manufacturers of the famous "Purity'' carbonated waters and cordials (who are throwing open their premises for inspection during Winter Show Week), contains machinery which greatly interest* all those who see it. In all the firm lias no less than 40 different machines, which handle, thoroughly soak, sterilise, brush, rinse, syrup, fill, seal, label and deliver bottles of any size at the rate of 120 dozen per hour. Many of these machines were specially imported from America and Europe, but the majority of them have been designed by the firm itself and made to its order. A more up-to-date plant, it is said, does not exist, and numbers of our readers, we feel assured, will welcome the opportunity of inspecting such a model factory. Kacli and all of the machines perform their work with a completeness and accuracy which makes the onlooker marvel, the labelling and counting machines being specially wonderful. This machine affixes two labels, one of which contains a number on the side nearest the bottle, while at the same time it makes a record of the quantity produced. Messrs Thomson and Co. had only one German-made machine on their premises, aud this, since the war began, has been replaced by an exactly similar machine made by Messrs Cosseus and Black, Dunedin. It is a conveyer labelling machine, and is used for placing labels oil Thomson's soda and other drinks the firm makes. The firm has left nothing to chance, nor does it work in ignorance of the exact cost of working each machine, which is individually driven. There are contrivances which enable one to see at a glance if anything is interfering with the smooth running of the machinery, and a register is affixed showing the total amount of electricity used in running each machine. In every detail Messrs Thomson and Co. have brought their plant up to the highest state of eflicieney, and visitors shown over the premises have expressed surprise at the magnitude of the plant. They (the firm) have also very scientific, instruments for analysing every particle of raw material used in manufacturing. Visitors will be shown over the factory during the forthcoming Winter Show oil 'May HO and 31, and June 1, :S and 5. The hours will be: On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 to 12, 2 to 5. 7 to S>; Friday, 10 to 12 and 2 to 5; (Saturday, 10 to 12; Mouday, 10 to 12 and 2 to a. No doubt few of our readers going to the Duuedin Winter Show will miss the opportunity of inspecting Messrs Thomson and Co. 's factory with its interesting and model machinery. Thomson's factory, we may point out, is situated nearly opposite Hie Agricultural Hail, where the Show is to he held.
