36,073 SUMMONSES. Remarkable revelations on smuggling are supplied in an official statement by the Dutch General Headquarters. It is pointed out that- during 1915 there were <16,679 summonses issued for smuggling, of which about 10,000 were a t the instance of the Customs, 5000 by the State police, 20,000 by the military authorities, 600 by the local police anil 800 by the combined' forces. In the Zeeland area., among other things, were seized 25 tons of grain, 25 tons of flour, 26 tons of beans and 10$ tons of steam coal. In the same period it was necessary to take stricter measures, and 62 smugglers were killed or wounded by fire from soldiers.
