MUSIC IN THE TRENCHES.
"Somewhere" in France an officer has devised an ingenious method of relieving the monontony of life in the dugouts at the fromt with intermittent musical entertainments. Jt apepars that lie fixed up a gramophone to play into the transmitter of a telephone connected in turn with the wires of the various divisions of the forces stationed in the firing line, a feat made possible bemoans of the telephones attached to tele- • graphic instruments in use between headquarters and trenches, Thus at any time music is "on tap." An incident is related of an almost" supernatural effect produced by the power of music; how in the pauses of the hellish din of a bombardment the voice of a famous songstress, like a redeeming spirit's voice, rang out. more gloriously, it seemed, after every thunderous interlude played by the* guns. It might be the inspiration for a "Symphonic Poem" of the future, with an orchestra of entirely novel composition, far ahead of Tsehaikowsky.
