AN AMERICAN'S REVENGE.

The following story forms tho subject of an energetio leading article in the 'Gentlewoman.' The. story is told by a young American officer who was serving with the British troops; he said, "Well, the first time it was like this: We were supposed to be engaged in nice, civilised warfare, and even after the Huns had done the most awful tilings, we were under the strictest orders to stick to Hoyle. Lord Bryce made a line speech in Parliament against reprisals, and tlie 'Government adopted his policy, and the officers passed stern words down the line, and if any chap broke, over the line he win in bad. You can imagine how strict they were when I tell you that for four successive days the Germans hanged away at our anir bulances with particular relish, and we stood there and let them gather up their wounded and never pulled a trigger. But the time came when my pai, as fine a young Englishman as God ever made, got his along with a dozen or more others, but he was still able to wave that he was only wounded. Two of my boys were just lifting him into the ambulance, when all three Wore shot to pieces. Then 1 bided my time, which; was not long in coming. A score or soof Germans lay writhing in a heap after a, futile assault, and I got the rango for my 18-pounder and waited. Sure enough, in 20 minutes or so out came an ambulance with, I guess, a dozen (soldiers, as nonchalantly as you please, and feeling as safe as' a chick, as they had everv reason to feel. They got their wounded aboard, and were just starting back, when I blew the whole lot to and gone. Of course, I got it in the neck at headquarters the next morning, but they let our ambulances alone after that. " ;
