THE BOY SCOUTS.

(By Scoutmaster.) The Balclutha troop of Boy Scouts, under the command of Scoutmaster Rasmussen, assembled in St. Mark *s Hall last Wednesday evening (May 10), at 7 o'clock. During the evening the following work was done: Bridge-building, first aid, signalling and concert work. The attendance was good and the discipline excellent. It is hoped that after the coming demonstration more interesting work will be taught the boys, it being the intention of the scoutmaster to devote more time to outside work. Word has beeu received that war service badges are now being issued by Dominion Headquarters. To gain this badge it is necessary for a boy to perform 84 hours of patriotic work of any nature. The badge is about three inches long and half an inch deep, and has a background of red, on which a crown and the figures "1914" are worked in gold. There are quite a number of scouts in this district who have qualified for them, and it is hoped that they will receive same at an earlv date.

Conditions governing the New Zealand Clothing Factory's challenge cup for Boy Scout marksmanship have been received. The competitions will be. held during the last weeks iu June, July, August and September in each and the team making the highest aggregate score in any three competitions will be the winners of the cup, will receive a special marksman's badge-and be known as the champion shooting team for the year.

At the close of the meeting on Wednesday evening the following promotions were made: —Corporals E. Mitchell and J. Pennyeook to leaders, Scouts D. Watt, K. Mitchell, 11. Eiddle and M, Edwards to corposrals.
